It’s tax time, and I’m here to offer a couple of links and tips to help lower-income earners get their taxes done for free. Yes, for free. To start, you will need to go to the IRS website which offers links to free file companies, but don’t pick one right out of the gate! After taking a look at what is offered, then go to your home state’s Department of Taxation and Finance website, and review the tax professionals listed there so you can ensure that the company you choose will be able to do both your federal and state taxes. This will save you time in having to reenter the information.

Secondly and more importantly, after you complete your federal taxes do not click on the link to start your state taxes; instead, go back to your state website and pick the company you used to file your federal taxes. It’s an extra step, but this will save you money. If you do not do this, you will most likely be charged for filing your state taxes and/or you will have to contact the company directly to see if you can get a promotion code to waive the charge.

Lastly, please ensure you have the most up-to-date information available regarding filing your tax returns, deductions, tax scams and phishing by reviewing your state’s home page as well as the IRS homepage.

May your tax filing be easy, fast and a plentiful return!

The tax man’s taken all my dough,
And left me in my stately home,
Lazing on a sunny afternoon.
And I can’t sail my yacht,
He’s taken everything I’ve got,
All I’ve got’s this sunny afternoon…
-Ray Davies of The Kinks singing “Sunny Afternoon”
