January 30, 2018 Leave a comment

Thank you Alyssa Milano for your advocacy efforts & organization of the #StateOfTheDream Initiative.

#StateOfTheDream Initiative

OVERVIEW: On Tuesday night (6pm PST/9pm EST), Donald Trump will deliver his SOTU address. #StateOfTheDream will highlight what truly makes America great: that we come from many places, races and creeds, and together work for a more perfect union.

Our digital #StateOfTheDream address will support our dreamers and immigrants, call for a DREAM Act, lean into the Senate, fundraise for United We Dream, and express our vision for a more inclusive, progressive America.

We will provide a social media toolkit closer to the 30th, but we also invite you create a brief (60 seconds or less) video describing your dream for America: What you hope for. What inspires YOU. (We especially encourage those running for office and those already serving to do so!). All videos should be posted simultaneously at 6pm PST/9pm EST with the hashtag #StateOfTheDream on all of your social channels. After the video blast, you can proceed to post tweets from the toolkit or your own messaging. We just ask that you continue the unifying tweetstorm with the #StateOfTheDream hashtag.

WHEN: Tuesday, January 30th at 6pm PST/9pm EST

WHAT: #StateOfTheDream initiative

WHO: Members of The Resistance, elected officials, those running for office, any and all Americans who want to use their voices for positive change! Love IS louder.

Be present and in the moment. -Alyssa Milano

Don’t Shop. Support Causes.

November 19, 2017 Leave a comment

My favorite gift last year was from my mom who donated to Heifer International in my name. It was the best gift ever, so please consider giving the gift of caring. Don’t shop. Support causes.

On the news, a woman said she was going to spend much more money this year on gifts than any other, and I wondered if any causes would benefit from her generosity. Would there be children who could count on food on their table and a roof over their heads? Would their parents have an opportunity to provide for their family?

Last year, my family gave gifts from Heifer International, and it made my day to know that families would have a hand up in the new year with thoughtful gifts that help others.

You can buy gifts to give to your family members like jewelry, accessories, clothes, etc. that benefit others, and you can send cards that announce a gift donated in honor of your family member.

Here’s some organizations to check out:

Greater Good is an umbrella organization that assists with fighting Hunger, Breast Cancer, Animals, Veterans, Autism, Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, Literacy, and the Rainforest. You can choose to support the site in general or support a particular cause by clinking on your preference.

Heifer International

“Heifer International’s mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.”

“ONE is a campaigning and advocacy organization of more than eight million people around the world taking action to end extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa.”

You can make an impact by changing lives for the better. Please consider giving gifts that help others this season.

You may have heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. There’s another day you might want to know about: Giving Tuesday. The idea is pretty straightforward. On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, shoppers take a break from their gift-buying and donate what they can to charity. – Bill Gates

Donate to #OneAmericaAppeal Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria

“Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria have brought terrible devastation— but also brought out the best in humanity. As former Presidents, we wanted to come together to help our fellow citizens in Texas, Florida and the Caribbean as they recover and rebuild.

Please give whatever you can. Every cent donated through the One America Appeal will help the victims recover. Thank you.”

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

Give the Gift that Gives

December 28, 2016 Leave a comment

I had a lovely holiday and hope all my friends and family were able to spend time with family and friends during this holiday season (in person, over the phone or with holiday cards).

In this season of giving, I have to share one of my gifts because I hope it becomes a family tradition for us and for many others: giving gifts through Heifer International. My mom gave me a “Flock of Hope,” a flock of ducks, a flock of chicks and bees.

Please consider starting this gift-giving tradition for the holidays and throughout the year.

Happy Holidays, Happy New Year and Peace to you and yours.

A Flock of Hope donation is a remarkable gift that can lift a family from hunger and poverty and ensure their future. –Heifer International Catalog

Listen to Kids & Learn Compassion

September 29, 2016 1 comment

It’s sad to see what is going on in the world; but if we want to know what to do, then listen to the kids. The children will show you the compassionate way to help others around the world as well as in our own neighborhoods.

While many American citizens are against accepting Syrian refugees, one little boy contacted President Obama, explaining how his family would adopt a little boy who lost his family. Six-year-old Alex stated, “We will give him a family and he will be our brother.”

Zianna Oliphant chose to address Charlotte’s City Council over the #BlackLivesMatter movement, a struggle impacting so many people. Zianna said:

“I feel like that we are treated differently than other people. I don’t like how we’re treated…We are black people, and we shouldn’t have to feel like this. We shouldn’t have to protest because y’all are treating us wrong. We do this because we need to, and we have rights. I’ve been born and raised in Charlotte, and I never felt this way till now. And I can’t stand how we’re treated. It’s a shame that our fathers and mothers are killed and we can’t see them anymore. It’s a shame that we have to go to their graveyard and bury them and we have tears and we shouldn’t have tears. We need our fathers and mothers to be by our side.” – Zianna Oliphant

So, you can choose to be compassionate. You can choose to make a difference. You can choose to be strong, caring and courageous, like these children, and we will have a better world for it. If you dare to care.

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive. -Dalai Lama
