Donate to #OneAmericaAppeal Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria

“Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria have brought terrible devastation— but also brought out the best in humanity. As former Presidents, we wanted to come together to help our fellow citizens in Texas, Florida and the Caribbean as they recover and rebuild.

Please give whatever you can. Every cent donated through the One America Appeal will help the victims recover. Thank you.”

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

I had a lovely holiday and hope all my friends and family were able to spend time with family and friends during this holiday season (in person, over the phone or with holiday cards).

In this season of giving, I have to share one of my gifts because I hope it becomes a family tradition for us and for many others: giving gifts through Heifer International. My mom gave me a “Flock of Hope,” a flock of ducks, a flock of chicks and bees.

Please consider starting this gift-giving tradition for the holidays and throughout the year.

Happy Holidays, Happy New Year and Peace to you and yours.

A Flock of Hope donation is a remarkable gift that can lift a family from hunger and poverty and ensure their future. –Heifer International Catalog

Listen to Kids & Learn Compassion

September 29, 2016 1 comment

It’s sad to see what is going on in the world; but if we want to know what to do, then listen to the kids. The children will show you the compassionate way to help others around the world as well as in our own neighborhoods.

While many American citizens are against accepting Syrian refugees, one little boy contacted President Obama, explaining how his family would adopt a little boy who lost his family. Six-year-old Alex stated, “We will give him a family and he will be our brother.”

Zianna Oliphant chose to address Charlotte’s City Council over the #BlackLivesMatter movement, a struggle impacting so many people. Zianna said:

“I feel like that we are treated differently than other people. I don’t like how we’re treated…We are black people, and we shouldn’t have to feel like this. We shouldn’t have to protest because y’all are treating us wrong. We do this because we need to, and we have rights. I’ve been born and raised in Charlotte, and I never felt this way till now. And I can’t stand how we’re treated. It’s a shame that our fathers and mothers are killed and we can’t see them anymore. It’s a shame that we have to go to their graveyard and bury them and we have tears and we shouldn’t have tears. We need our fathers and mothers to be by our side.” – Zianna Oliphant

So, you can choose to be compassionate. You can choose to make a difference. You can choose to be strong, caring and courageous, like these children, and we will have a better world for it. If you dare to care.

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive. -Dalai Lama

Help Furnish Homes for Formerly Homeless

Today, I found out about Humble Design, an organization re-purposing donated items to furnish homes for the formerly homeless. I saw the smiles on faces of people who hadn’t had a bed to call their own in over a year, and it touched my heart, so I hope you will support by offering assistance and/or sharing this post.

Humble Design’s mission: to turn four bare walls into a clean, dignified and welcoming home by re-purposing gently used household goods.

For those of you who can support Humble Design’s Michigan-based organization, thank you, and please consider using this comprehensive list as a guideline to support local charitable organizations, as well.
